An interactive journey

In search for a book by the writer you have discovered tonight, sit and talk with other festival goers, or just recovering from it all. That's what the theatre's foyer is for.

DJ Jan plays music and writers sign their work in the bookshop.

Visual artist Valerie van Leersum and composer Gerco Aerts built an interactive installation in the foyer. They invite the visitors to travel to Surinam, Morocco and Indonesia with them. Listen to stories of a country left behind, a journey, future and desires, family and traditions.

Sonologic landscape

Languages clash and mingle in the new country. Composer Jos Janssen put poems by the famous Sundanese author Ajip Rosidi to wonderful electronic sounds. The Sundanese journalist and editor Hawé Setiawan talks to Rosidi and the Sundanese/Dutch art historian Alit Djajasoebrata about language, decolonisation and alienation of the mother tongue. Right and Wrong

Living in a country torn by war means making choices, choosing between right and wrong, is the general feeling. 'During the war you just lived your life,' says Immanuel Hutajulu, 'the gentleman bandit', on the choices he never made. Actor Martijn Apituley plays Immanuel's life story, written by Marije Plomp. Writer and poet Sitor Situmorang reads from his story Kasim, about the well-considered choices of a perseverant civil servant. Dutch spoken.

Film: Old and New in Indonesia

The turning-point was reached. Indonesia was ready to go its own way. The propaganda in the film 'Old and new in Indonesia' which prepared public opinion for a swift turning over of the colony sounded grand and compelling. But was the Netherlands ready? The film from 1947 was taken out of circulation and never screened. The film is introduced by Gerda Jansen Hendriks. Dutch spoken.

Film: Between Past and Present/ Diantara masa lalu dan masa sekarang

Old man Sastro Atmojo is still as militant as when he was a child. A memory of the independence fighters, between past and present, disillusionment and hope. An award winning short by Eddie Cahyono (Indonesia, 2001). With an introduction by Katinka van Heeren. Dutch spoken.

Music and image

DJ Peter Keppy only plays 78 record discs. Music from the early years of the new Indonesia: from classical krontjong and gambang kromong to kecapi suling and tango.

This music can't do without images. Alex Supartono made a selection from the photo collection of the Indonesian Press Photo Service. We see the work of early Indonesian photo journalists, who previously worked for the Dutch and Japanese. They recorded important historical events. The Mendur brothers for instance were the only ones present when Sukarno declared independence on 17 August 1945. But they also had an eye for ordinary life.

Slides from the Royal Tropical Institute, shot between 1960 and 1970 by among others B. Lawson, serve as counter-images.

At the end of the evening the Jakarta Street Band will play a swinging mix of krontjong and dangdut.

From Batavia to Jakarta in prose, poetry and film

The past is what has been, governments cherish hush-hush policies, but history remains alive in the family memory. How do younger generations look at the making of Indonesia? What is left of the aspirations of their parents? Has the decolonization process been completed? Young writer Nukila Amal projects herself in the time. In addition she gives her own view on history. Roaming the streets past buildings, streets and squares the Jakartan poet Zeffry Alkatiri brings images from past and present to life. His poems are framed by historical and contemporary film and sound material about Batavia and Jakarta. Martin de Vletter of the Dutch Architecture Institute comments on the images and talks with Zeffry Alkatiri. Joss Wibisono hosts the conversation. Dutch and English spoken.

Cityscapes

The powershifts in the long period of decolonisation have translated themselves in streetscapes and cityscapes. Buildings changed roles and houses and earth got other owners. What role has the government played in these changes? Fourteen researchers charted the changing pattern of some big Indonesian cities, under the expert guidance of Freek Colombijn and Bambang Purwanto.

Decolonization on location

Historiography in the present Indonesia differs substantially of that of the previous generation, at the time of president Suharto's New Order. A new class of young, passionate historians look at their history with a fresh outlook. Programme coordinator Muhamed Hisyam dwells on the renewing sides of the research, drawing conclusions on the changing historiography in Indonesia.

Who is the boss?

Along the railroads and in the harbours and the mines Indonesian workers worked in the service of the Dutch oppressor or the local native elite. How did these workers, but also the domestic workers and betjak drivers undergo the change from colonial rule to the unitary state? Ho did race, gender, social class local circumstances and power changes determine these experiences? Researcher and coordinator Ratna Saptari reports.

From Javanese Bank to Bank Indonesia

The Dutch-East Indian province brought forth a thriving businesslife with a monopoly for Dutch enterprises. When Sukarno declared the republic Indonesia in 1945 it seemed that there was no future was Dutch companies on Indonesian soil However, Indonesia was not ready to take over the torch from the Netherlands. Not earlier than 1958, after the abrupt take-over of Dutch companies by Indonesian trade union members did Indonesia succeed in shaking off this colonial heritage. Historian Thomas Lindblad tells about this study.
