Jowi Schmitz

(1972) writes books for both adults and children, as well as articles for Trouw, among others. She started with two novels for adults, Leopold and Kus van je zus, and in 2012 published her first children's book, Ik heet Olivia en daar kan ik ook niks aan doen, which was awarded the Vlag en Wimpel and the German Luchs Preise. A year later, the children's thriller Schat onder de stad (Treasure under the City) was published. She then wrote the book Te vroeg geboren. Dagboek over mijn zoon (Born Too Early: Diary about my Son), which won the 2014 Inktslaafliteratuurprijs, and Nooit nooit nooit meer aan de wal (Never Ever Again on Shore), a non-fiction book about the remarkable boat dwellers of Amsterdam. She wrote the Young Adult books Weg (Gone, 2016, Dioraphte Literature Prize), Beste broers (Best Brothers, 2020, Zilveren Griffel), Slipjacht (Slip Hunt, 2022) and IJsnacht (Ice Night, 2025), among others. Jowi Schmitz has been awarded the Nienke van Hichtum Prize 2025 for her young adult novel Kip op je kop (Chicken on your head).
