Laura Broekhuysen

(1983) studied violin at the Conservatory of Amsterdam and Writing for Performance at the theatre faculty in Utrecht. In the same week that she graduated as a violinist, her debut novel Twee linkerlaarzen (Two Left Boots, 2008) was published. This was followed in 2011 by Hellend vlak (Sloping Surface), a novel set in Iceland's Westfjords. Laura wrote about her integration in Iceland in the books Winter-IJsland, mijn eerste jaar in een verlaten fjord (Winter Iceland, My First Year in a Deserted Fjord, 2016) and Flessenpost uit Reykjavik (Message in a Bottle from Reykjavik, 2019). Her first collection of poetry, Wij capabelen (We Capables), was published in 2022. In the novel Magnetisch middernacht (Magnetic Midnight), which won her 2025 F. Bordewijk Prize – annual prize for the best Dutch-language prose book – she incorporated stories from the Old Icelandic Edda. Laura Broekhuysen works as a violin teacher in Reykjavik.
