Anjet Daanje

(The Netherlands, 1965) writes novels, stories, poems and scripts. In 2023 she won the Constantijn Huygens Prize for her body of work. Previously in 2022 and 2023, she had won several Dutch literary prizes for her novel Het lied van ooievaar en dromedaris (The Song of the Stork and Dromedary). At age 21, while studying maths at the University of Utrecht, she wrote her first novel Pianomuziek in de regen (Piano Music in the Rain), followed by five further novels. In 2000, her novel De herinnerde soldaat (The Remembered Soldier) won great acclaim, and The Song of the Stork and Dromedary has since become a bestseller. The book has an ingenious narrative structure inspired by the life of Emily Brontë and her novel Wuthering Heights: the story of Daantje's protagonist Eliza begins in 1847 and ends in our era.
