Tuly Salumu

(Belgium, 1988) is a novelist, journalist and columnist for Flemish daily newspaper De Morgen. Her debut novel Bintje is a tragic coming-of-age story about a girl with Congolese roots living in the Belgian suburbs. Bintje, which focuses on the themes of love, domestic violence, racism, addiction and motherhood, was published in 2023. Her concise and direct language has been compared to the style of Edouard Louis. Salumu is also a highly regarded essayist and columnist. In her essay Gezocht: de zwarte genen van mijn witte zoon (Wanted: the black genes of my white son) – nominated for the Joost Zwagerman Essay Prize – Salumu describes her attempts to research her son's black identity, which symbolise her larger questions about the uncertainty and futility of colour and genes. She is currently working on her second book, a novel about romance, religion and neurodiversity.
