About Writers Unlimited

Writers Unlimited brings writers and poets, spoken word artists and musicians together with audiences at the annual Writers Unlimited International Literature Festival in The Hague each January. Throughout the year, we also organise programmes at theatres and libraries across The Hague. With international and Dutch guests, established names and new talent. With conversations, readings and performances in both Dutch and English. Across cultural and linguistic boundaries, in an informal and celebratory atmosphere.

Writers Unlimited International Literature Festival The Hague

Since 1995, Writers Unlimited has organised the Netherlands’ leading international literature festival in The Hague. Every January, several thousand visitors come together to hear writers and poets discuss and present their work on current social and political issues. With more than a hundred participants and over thirty programmes at venues across The Hague, the festival offers audiences the chance to discover and be inspired by the diverse perspectives of authors from around the world, particularly from non-Western countries.

Since its first edition, the festival has been held at Theater aan het Spui and Filmhuis Den Haag. Today, it also takes place at other venues across The Hague, including Paard, Amare, Theater Dakota, Laaktheater, branches of the Public Library of The Hague in Nieuw Waldeck, Laak, Schilderswijk and Ypenburg, the International Institute of Social Studies and The Hague University of Applied Sciences.

What began in 1995 as Indische winternacht (Indonesian Winter Night), a gathering of writers from the Netherlands and Indonesia, later expanding to include authors from Suriname, the Caribbean and South Africa, as well as Europe, the United States, Latin America, Africa and Asia, has grown into one of the Netherlands’ most important literary events.
