John H. de Bye

(Paramabibo, 1942). After his school years in Paramaribo, he studied medicine at Utrecht University. His doctor’s exam was in Rotterdam, where he specialized as a surgeon. In 1974 he returned to Surinam and worked as a surgeon in Nickerie, later in Paramaribo. He studies Jewish genealogy as a hobby – his findings go back to the thirteenth an fourteenth century. In 2001 Ter dood veroordeeld, Liefde en Dood in de Surinaams-joodse Geschiedenis (Sentenced to death. Love and Death in Surinam-Jewish History). In the spring of 2002 Geloof, Hoop en Liefde, vestiging van de joden in de Surinaamse Jungle (Faith, Hope and Love. Jewish settlements in the Surinam jungle) is to appear. In the autumn of 2002 his third book will be published, the reference book Historische schetsen uit het Surinaamse jodendom (Historical sketches of the Surinam Jews).
