Jan Kuijper

(Amsterdam, 1947) made his debut in 1973 with the collection Sonnetten (Sonnets), also the verse form on which he has focused in his literary oeuvre. In 1980, he received the Herman Gorter Prize for the collection Oogleden (Eyelids) and in 1990 the Jan Campert Prize for Tomben (Tombs) for which he drew inspiration from seven centuries of Dutch poetry. He also put his talent and technique to use in translations of, among others, dozens of children's books such as Lewis Carroll's De jacht op de Slaai (The Hunting of the Snark) and, in 2010, Hadewijch's Liefdesliederen (Lovesongs). Kuijper worked as an editor at publishing house Querido and later at Athenaeum-Polak &Van Gennep. He was editor of the literary magazine De Revisor from 1984 to 1993.
