Connie Palmen in Jij zegt het (Whatever You Say) gives a voice to poet Ted Hughes, whose wife, poetess Sylvia Plath, committed suicide after the limits of their love had been reached.

Writers and the public meet and mingle in the Wintercafé. Master of ceremonies Francis Broekhuijsen and musician Dick van der Harst create a warm winter atmosphere. Snacks and drinks, the Van Stockum Bookshop, the Cultural News Agency, and the interactive quiz Mind of Moral by Sade Schönhage contribute to the fun. After midnight, DJ Socrates keeps everyone dancing.

Where Can You Hide?

Four innocent young women looking for refuge. Forgotten (Agualusa) tells the story of Ludo, who locks herself in her home on the eve of Angola's independence. The Book of Memory (Gappah) gives voice to an emprisoned girl who was abused by her white adoptive father. In Dark, almost Night (Bator) Alicja tries to uncover her deceased sister's secret in the abandoned house on the Polish-German border. And thirteen year old Emma in Fire Stack (Dragomá) is picked up from an orphanage in the middle of the Romanian revolution.

Rodaan Al Galidi roamed the world without a passport until he ended up in a Dutch refugee centre. Without the benefits of refugee status or an integration diploma, he built a career as a writer. His latest book, Hoe ik talent voor het leven kreeg (How I Found a Talent for Life), is presented to the public and to special guest Adriaan van Dis tonight.
