Film: Heremakono

A screening of the film selected by writer Vamba Sherif. The film takes place in Nouadhibou, Mauritania, a transit community that adds up to one big "wait for good fortune" (Heremakono). Abdallah is a student on the way to Europe, who first stops to visit his mother. He no longer seems to belong there, but gradually something changes.

Linguistic Colonization: Then and Now

To what extent has African literature been able to wrest itself free of linguistic colonization? Can the predominance of English still be stopped, or is it a lost cause? A conversation with the American-Kenyan writer, poet, university lecturer in English and activist Mukoma Wa Ngugi and with Ellah Wakatama, Editor-at-Large of Scottish publishing firm Cannongate Books. She is also a senior Research Fellow at Manchester University and Chair of the Caine Prize for African Writing.

High-school students from Edith Stein College and de Vrije School Den Haag recite their own poetry, the result of workshops and poetry lessons given at the schools by poet and guest teacher Diann van Faassen. Appearing with them is poet Obe Alkema, a nominee for the 2019 C. Buddingh' Prize, as well as young student-poet Mirle Wittekoek, winner of the 2019 Young Campert Award.
