Theatre: Mahabharata
A theatre programme in the run-up to the festival. Marjolijn van Heemstra, poet and actress, made this performance together with Indian actor Satchit Puranik. When they were twelve they saw the same film: Mahabharata, by director Peter Brook. The Mahabharata is one of the holy books of Hinduism and Brook's film version caused a great deasl of controversy worldwide. In the West the film was applauded, but criticised in India. The film made an indelible impression on Van Heemstra and Puranik. But they differ in opinion about Brook's approach. Can a director from the West run off with a holy book from the East just like that? Isn't there something like a universal story? With these questions Van Heemstra and Puranik made a contemporary interpretation of the epic story. During a trip through the Netherlands and India they try to answer the question who actually owns the Mahabharata and what the struggle about this story says about the world we live in. A festive compilation about giving meaning in 2012, in which awkward questions emerge on the role of holy stories in the present day.
