Antjie Krog, major poet and journalist from South-Africa, opens the festival with her 'Delphisch saying' on the future of the African continent. After this, a full and varied programme starts with literature, music, film and performers, on five different stages in the one theatre . In the literary programme there are debates and readings by Thomas Rosenboom and Frank Westerman, the South-Africans Zakes Mda, Sello Duiker and Booker-prize nominee Damon Galgut; three Indonesian authors (amongst them top-performer Putu Wijaya), and four Dutch poets with their visionary poems in a live radio-broadcast by VPRO. In the movie-theatres writers show their favorite film fragments that illustrate this year's festival theme. And there is fascinating music from the Sumatran musicians Syahryal & Grup, the world-famous Plaatjies & Plaatjies from South-Africa, and dancing through the night on Congolese rhythms. One ticket give access to all programmes on the five stages in the theatre.

The South-African writer and jounalist Antjie Krog opened Winternachten with the first in a series of six Delphic sayings. Afterwards she talks with the Iranian/Dutch poet and scientist Afshin Ellian on the South-African Truth- and Reconciliation committee. Ellian recently obtained his doctorate on this very subject. Recovery, accommodate, adaptaton, reconciliaton and forgiveness. According to Krog reconciliation is part of a long African tradition. The events around the removal of Soekarno by Suharto in 1965 leave many unanswered questions. Who was behind the coup and the violent consequences? In Indonesia only now the stories are being heard of the murders and persecution of thousands of assumed communists. Tv journalist and writer Aad van den Heuvel was present at that time and wrote about this in one of his books. In this programme he described the dubious role inthe preparations of the coup of the Dutch priest Beek. A futuristic continualy running program with seven short films that present an image of America's view of the future between 1940 and 1964. It starts with the World Exhibition of 1939-1940 and ends with the World Exhibition of Seattle (1964). In dazzling Technicolour the houshold robots take over the chores of the housewife and a Futurama of 1940 shows a vivid future image of a typical American town in 1960. Furthermore images of futuristic 'killer car's', full automatic kitchens, fashion and the furniture of Eames, Saarinen and Bertoia, that without a problem made the transition towards the 21th century in videoclips and commercials, but also in the living room, where it still radiates the futuristic air of that time. The Poetry School organizes together with Winternachten a writers contest, involving two secondary schools from The Hague, the Johan de Witt College and the Terracollege. A special lesson program inspires hundreds of pupils to write poems about their vision of the future and their ideals. The leader of the group, Syahrial, works since 1981 as a composer for one of the best modern dance companies of Indonesia, Gumarang Sakti. He performs his own compositions with this group.
