A varied evening with programmes on five stages. Writers, poets, and visitors come together this evening in a festive, informal atmosphere. The writers will read from work commissioned by the festival, or from their books and discuss current themes. And at the end of the evening everyone dances the night away. Language is no problem: there are programmes in English and in Dutch. Tickets give admission to all programme parts.

Line-up

Roos Pollmann

(Amsterdam, 1988) calls herself a ‘multimedial storyteller’. She likes to do a lot of things at the same time, like writing, acting in films and in the theatre, play the ukelele as awell as writing Dutch country music. Two columns of hers in Dorst (VPRO tv guide) caused Nijgh & van Ditmar publishers to ask her to write a novel. In the book, to be published early 2014, she deals with themes which often occur in her theatre work and in her columns: she is amazed about the world and sketches the struggle to grow up, sexuality often playing an important role. Pollmann acted in various theatre performances with among others Theatergroep Thomas. During the Amsterdam Fringe Festival 2013 she did the main character role in the living-room performance of Bezoek, about a young woman seeking a confrontation with herself.

Umar Mirza

(The Hague, NL 1987) is a talented tv host, chairman and columnist. His parents emigrated to the Netherlands from Pakistan. At the age of 18 Umar Mirza began as a columnist and editor of the multicultural platform Wijblijvenhier.nl and developed his outlook on the Netherlands in contributions on various weblogs, opinion sites, in magazines and collections of essays. In addition he regularly sits on panels, chairs meetings and leads debates. Since 2009 he is a guest lecturer at Fontys Hogeschool voor Journalistiek in Tilburg and since 2011 has hosted tv programmes for NTR (Mijn moskee is top). Umar did the minor People and Society at Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam and in 2012 completed his Master's at the Technische Universiteit Delft. He was elected one of the twelve Best Graduates of the Netherlands. He is working on a new television programme. www.umarmirza.nl.

We plunge into a crucial episode in our history: 1945-1950. WOII had ended, but in the former Dutch East Indies the struggle which went hand in hand with colonisation was still raging vehemently. Ian Buruma looks into East-West relations in 1945 in his latest book The Year Zero. In January Ad van Liempt publishes his After Liberation: the Bad Years between 1945-1950, a book and a seven-part tv series in which he deals with the changing relation between the Netherlands and the former Dutch East Indies. The Indonesian writer Linda Christanty opens the programme with her view on that period, which changed the balance of power for good and Indonesia breaking away from the Netherlands. In Dutch. China and Japan share a war past; a subject that was unmentionable for a long time. At present the traumatic events and troubled relations are increasingly dealt with in film and literature. Geling Yan's film adaptation of her novel Thirteen Girls from Nanjing is about a bloodbath in 1937 in the city of Nanjing, a very important theme in modern Chinese literature. Ian Buruma is an expert on China and Japan and wrote the historical novel The China Lover about a Japanese film heroine at the time of the Japanese occupation of China (1937-1945). For Rudolf Kahl and Theo van den Boogaard boundaries are there to be crossed, both in word and image. Both strip cartoonists break taboos and rub and grate with their work. Kahl does this by his inventarisation of German Nazi uniforms and by telling the German side of the story of WOII. Van den Boogaard does it by being part of the sexual revolution with his shameless, candid strip cartoons about sex. With his cartoon hero Sjef van Oekel he created a modern Tijl Uilenspiegel. (Joan Chen, 1998) After the story Celestial Bath from the anthology White Snake and Other Stories by the Chinese writer and festival guest Geling Yan. The film is based on her own life story and is set in the People's Republic of China during the Cultural Revolution of the 1970s. In this era many people were sent from the towns to the countryside in order to revise their knowledge of Maoist communism. Tailor daughter Xiu Xiu, a sixteen year old, ends up in the Tibetan highland in order to learn the trade of horse tamer. She bides her time, but when she returns she is not yet free from the Chinese authorities. The film was made in Tibet without permission by the Chinese government.
