FILM: The Truman Show

A screening of the film selection of poet Rosabelle Illes. The Truman Show is actually a very scary movie. Without knowing it, Truman Burbank (Jim Carrey) is playing the lead in a reality soap - precisely the kind of television that became so popular shortly after the film's release. Lightly inspired by Philip K. Dick (among others), director Peter Weir tells this bizarre story in which absolutely everthing is as fake as fake can be.
Until Truman begins to suspect that something is out of joint in his life, the syrupy sweet setup is wonderful. It begins to turn ugly as soon as you realize how trapped Truman is. In the slipstream you begin to ask yourself how trapped we can become in our own lives. Featuring a penetrating performance by Jim Carrey.
Direction: Peter Weir
Featuring Jim Carrey, Laura Linney, Ed Harris (among others)
