In November during the IDFA festival in Amsterdam, Stand van de Maan (Position of the Moon) was awarded the Joris Ivens Award for the best documentary film. For several years director Leonard Retel Helmrich filmed the life of the widow Rumidjah, who lives together with her son Bakti and granddaughter Tari in a working-class area in Jakarta. The political and social unrest that grows in the country since the fall of president Suharto in 1998 and the conflicts with her son who was converted to Islam, cause the Christian Rumidjah to long for the simplicity of her native village in the countryside. The dynamically filmed Stand van de Maan is Retel Helmrich's second long film about life in present-day Indonesia. It is a sequel to his first film, the much praised Stand van de Zon (Position of the Sun) .
