'With their joyful approach they take the music out of the conservatory corridors and onto the street,' NRC writes about the Amsterdam Klezmer Band. The words ‘vibrant’ and ‘attractive’ characterise the songs of the Amsterdam septet the best. Combining traditional ‘klezmer basis’ with jazz, funk and Latin influences the Amsterdam Klezmer band leaves an ineradicable impression.

Amsterdam Klezmer Band

was founded in 1996 by alto-saxophonist Job Chajes, playing klezmer (Eastern European Jewish music) partly inspired on music from the Balkans. The band played among others at festivals such as Oerol and Lowlands. It also performs internationally. The greatest part of the repertoire has been written by the band members themselves. Gypsy and jazz influences make it difficult to pigeonhole their music. The often exuberant music of the band is buttressed by a live show. With Job Chajes - alto-saxophone and raps, Janfie Van Strien - clarinet, sopranino sax and backing vocals, Gijs Levelt - trumpet, Joop v.d. Linden - trombone, percussion and baritone-tuba, Theo Van Tol - accordion, Jasper de Beer - double bass and backing vocals and Alec Kopyt - percussion and singing.
