In the middle of the foyer of Theater aan het Spui, you enter a tranquil space. You are now in the Nomadic Monument for Gaza. This travelling art installation invites you to reflect on the victims in Gaza.

Visitors enter the art installation The Nomadic Monument for Gaza through soft felt pillars three metres high. The pillars are arranged in the shape of Gaza. The felt dampens the sound. Beneath this tranquil space lies a rug bearing a map of The Hague and its surroundings, an area the same size as the Gaza Strip. Inside the monument, each victim is commemorated with a line burned into the felt by hand, making the value and fragility of human life tangible and palpable. Visitors to the Nomadic Monument for Gaza are thus invited to reflect on the human drama unfolding before our eyes.

Ritual of remembrance | Monday 3.30 p.m., Tuesday and Wednesday 1 p.m.

Every day, a ritual takes place to commemorate new victims. Each victim is individually burned into the felt. An act that gives the violence a face.


Evening programmes:

- Tuesday, 9 September 2025: Opening – starts at 7:30 p.m.

Tuesday evening, 9 September, is the official opening, featuring discussions and debates. The exhibition will be opened by Younis Al-Khatib, president of the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS), a sister organisation of the Red Cross.

Ramsey Nasr, actor and writer, will give the opening speech. Other speakers include architect and urban researcher Nurhan Abujidi and architect Eric Vreedenburgh. Chris Keulemans will host the evening. This programme has been compiled in collaboration with Writers Unlimited.

- Wednesday 10 September 2025: Voices from Gaza (Literature evening) – starts at 8 p.m.

Wednesday evening, 10 September, will be devoted to Palestinian literature and the book series Stemmen uit Gaza (Voices from Gaza) by Jurgen Maas Publishers and the Hope Foundation. Palestinian writer (from Gaza) Amer Almassri will come to The Hague for the presentation of the Dutch translation of his collection of short stories The Man Who Looked Back.

With performances by former politician Jan Pronk, Arabic literature translator Djûke Poppinga, Palestinian-Dutch founder of the literary magazine FIKRA Magazine Aisja Hamed, visual artist Ingrid Rollema and Palestinian musician Ahmed Hawwash, among others. The evening will be presented by Hassnae Bouazza and Dario Goldbach.

The Nomadic Monument for Gaza was created on the initiative of visual artist Ingrid Rollema, visual artist Hetty Wempe, interior designer Karel Bodegom, architect Eric Vreedenburgh and curator Meta Knol, in collaboration with Het Nationale Theater, Uitgeverij Jurgen Maas, Stichting HOPE and Writers Unlimited. The Nomadic Monument for Gaza was developed in The Hague, the International City of Peace and Justice.
