The special book Het meisje met de zaadjes in het haar takes you along with Yaa, a young Ghanaian girl. She and her mother are forced to leave their village and are brought by boat to a foreign land.

But… in Yaa’s braids, her mother has hidden something: seeds from the fruits and vegetables of their homeland. In the middle of the night, Yaa gets out of bed to plant the seeds. In the great darkness, a spark of hope begins to bloom.

Listen to author Nancy Bosmans tell this beautiful story, inspired by true elements from the history of enslaved people. Hide your own seeds in Yaa’s braids. And enjoy harpist Indra Diallo as she plays the enchanting kora, a West African harp that also appears in Het meisje met de zaadjes in het haar.

This program is in Dutch and created in collaboration with De Betovering and Laaktheater.

Nancy Bosmans

has a Dutch father and a Ghanaian mother. She finds it important to tell stories that reflect her Ghanaian culture. De Boebalas (2023) is her first book. The picture book for everyone aged four and up, with illustrations by Lisa van Winsen, is based on Ghanaian stories that she heard during her childhood. The story begins when Neah, Ayah and Avah visit their Ghanaian grandmother. During dinner, they are served something they are totally unfamiliar with. It looks so different from what they eat at home! Their opinion is clear: they really don't like this... But luckily, grandma has a solution. She knows a very special monster: the Boebalas! This sweet beast takes the children on a tasting adventure to discover new flavours - and thus their own culture.
