Following the positive assessment by the Advisory Committee of the Municipality of The Hague on 7 June, Writers Unlimited received more good news today from the Dutch Foundation for Literature about its multi-year policy plan for 2025–2028: our festival will continue to receive structural national funding for the next four years.

“The committee is positive about the planned activities, which are broad and diverse and of high literary quality. Writers Unlimited has a solid and distinctive profile that is socially engaged and places literature at its centre, with a particular focus on non-Western voices. Through its programming, the organisation aims to continue reaching out into the city’s neighbourhoods, with a focus on broadening the understanding of literature and increasing diversity. The committee welcomes this approach and recognises Writers Unlimited’s contribution to the distribution and accessibility of cultural offerings in The Hague. The committee is unanimously enthusiastic about the organisation’s plans to programme in the Caribbean in the coming years.

The multi-year plan presents a consistent and clear vision with a strong social focus. The 2024 Writers Unlimited festival showed improvement and renewed energy under the new director. Following a challenging period, the organisation has regained stability, with programmes of high literary quality and a strong social focus. Writers Unlimited has a significant national reach, with many visitors coming from outside the city.”

We are incredibly happy with this recognition of our work and our plans for the coming years. This commitment means that we can continue to present a wide range of literary programmes for diverse audiences in The Hague, across the Netherlands and beyond.

The upcoming festival will celebrate Writers Unlimited’s 30th anniversary. We will mark the occasion with special programmes throughout the year. Alongside programmes for large audiences, we will also develop new tailor-made programmes in the coming years, in collaboration with organisations working in wellbeing, healthcare and the legal sector.

“The committee is positive about the planned activities, which are broad and diverse and of high literary quality.”
