Let's get physical: the body in stories and poems

Health, wellbeing, freedom: the 31st edition of the festival explored the body in literature. 'Let's get physical' was the motto of the Writers Unlimited International Literature Festival 2026. The festival took place from 22 to 25 January 2026 at twenty locations across The Hague.

In several programmes, we explored the ways in which writers, poets and artists gave the body a place in their work – as a source of desire, vulnerability, identity and resistance.

At a time when bodily autonomy and freedom of expression were increasingly under pressure, we discussed current issues including gender, violence, health, wellbeing, freedom and sexuality.

We also wanted to celebrate the body, with a focus on its representation in visual art, dance and music.
