Sat. 9 September: Hiroshima mon amour, open air film i.c.w. Roffa Mon Amour
Roffa Mon Amour and Writers Unlimited present the open-air screening of film classic Hiroshima mon amour (English subtitled) in the garden of Optie B (Binckhorst The Hague) on Saturday night, 9 September 2023. SOLD OUT!
Our Rotterdam film friends from Roffa Mon Amour are coming to The Hague again from 6 to 10 September with five open-air film nights at Optie B on the Binckhorst, Den Haag, the new project space operating under the wings of PIP Den Haag.
Roffa invited five cultural organisations from The Hague (PIP, Writers Unlimited, Flora, NEST and Movies That Matter) to choose a film: Writers Unlimited chose Fench film classic Hiroshima mon amour from 1959, directed by Alain Resnais after the screenplay by famous French writer and feminist Marguerite Duras.
A French woman (Emmanuelle Riva) and a Japanese man (Eiji Okada) experience an intense romance in Hiroshima. She came to Japan to star in a film about peace, he is an architect. In profound conversations, the stories of both protagonists blend together, against the gruesome backdrop of the devastation wrought by the atomic bomb.
Writers Unlimited chose this film because Connie Palmen's new book Voornamelijk vrouwen (Mainly Women, to be published by Prometheus, September 2023) is about female artistry (including that of Duras). Palmen also wrote the foreword for the new translation in Dutch by Kiki Coumans of Duras' international bestseller L'amant (to be published by De Geus, October 2023).
Moreover, Connie Palmen is one of the guests of Writers Unlimited International Literature Festival The Hague 2024: she will participate in several programmes during the grand festival nights Friday Night Unlimited (19 January) and Saturday Night Unlimited (20 January). Both nights, you choose your own route along six stages at Theater aan het Spui and Filmhuis Den Haag. Between 20:00 and 00:30 we will present 20 programmes, each ranging from 20 to 50 minutes.
